RESULTS FOR 18th February
1st v Old Finchleians Lost 6-1 (Allen)
The last 45 mins of football played by the 1s pre this game had the same oppo hit 5 past us in north London – So finding ourselves 3 nil down after only EIGHT mins at home in the return fixture I have to say that all sorts of final score lines were being predicted. We did then get a grip to the extent that Don notched with a cracking strike into the top right-hand corner and hit another beauty low left that the Finch keeper and skipper tipped round the post. The talk at half time was to keep up the momentum as the next goal would be key. First 10 mins of the 2nd half and we get our opening – Salas gets bundled over in the oppo box – PEN – Up steps Ben Wilkes but drags his shot into the body of the Finch keeper still 1-3 down. Finch go up the other end and get a corner – as its coming over Salas gets pushed to the ground as the Finch midfielder fires in the goal – Surely the ref will give us the free kick but no the goal stands and that totally breaks us. Sad to say we started badly and ended badly to go down 6-1.A quick word about the oppo midfielder who told the Ref it was our throw when the Ref had got it wrong – a very good sport ,well played that man.
MoM – Dapper Don
2nd v Crouch End Vampires Won 2-1 (One Direction x2)
What an awful place this is was the general opinion on getting to the ground and looking at the facilities and the bog of a pitch! I think we all just wanted to get on with the game and take the 3 points back to Mitcham! So that is exactly what we did.
The game started quite even with the reserves missing a couple of very good chances that really should have been taken. We restricted our oppo to limited opportunities with Chopsy and Desborough giving good cover from the full back positions. With Crouch End more interested in trying to bully a win out of us than actually beating us at football we started to realise that if we played our game we had a great chance to get the win. The only problem with that was the state of the pitch. It was impossible to pass the ball into centre mid due to the marsh that had been created. So we had to try and get the ball wide and quickly up to the front two. The reserves played some really good football considering the conditions but apart from the aforementioned chances could not create that golden one to be finished. 0-0 half time.
With the bottom end of the pitch being much better than the top this enabled the reserves to play more football which led to the opening goal. Bryant retrieved a long a ball over his head into our left back position, he squared the ball to Morrison who despite some shouts of boot it from Desborough played a pass into the feet of Keeble who played a great first time pass to Desborough. He then delivered a great pass to Tete after he made a great run in behind their full back. From there he crossed for One Direction to finish via a defenders shin.
Fair play to our oppo they managed to get back into the game with a close range effort soon after but the reserves kept going and One Direction got his second after a poor goal kick from their keeper. The reserves were not going to be beaten today and managed to weather two storms, one from the studs of the Crouch End players and another in the form of a hail storm to keep their promotion push alive!
Another big performance from the reserves this week with everyone working really hard and sticking at their game. Credit should also be given to the reserves for not reacting to some pretty awful tackles and provocation from our oppo which the ref never really got to grips with.
MOM Rhys Keeble-Another great game in centre mid, composed and committed throughout.
3rd v Old Blues Lost 4-1 (OG)
For the 2nd time this season the 3s were obliged to play a friendly against oppo aspiring to join the SAL. We were duly dispatched to face Old Blues at Old Deer Park where on arrival we were forced to pay £4.15 in the ground’s pay and display car park! With Guzman and Atif running late the oppo gave us a sub so we started with 10. From the kick off the oppo thought they would stroke it about around their box only for their full back’s pass to the keeper to evade the custodian of the Old Blues net, and slip quietly into the empty net. 1-0 up and we had barely touched the ball. Frani eventually arrived and we had the full compliment. However it was not long before the oppo equalized. It was the least they deserved to be fair. We held it to 1-1 at half time and despite conceding 3 in the 2nd half we generally played better. Good debut from Andrew Brooks at the back and decent effort from a makeshift side that included me marauding up front. Thanks to Frani and Izzy for helping us out this week.
4th v Old Minchendenians Lost 3-2
No report received to date but the 4s did not quite pull off the win against the holders. 2-0 up with 20 minutes to go.
5th v South Bank Cuaco 5 Lost 5-2
Poor performance against a team who are fourth in the division and could still technically go up …..Bit of a shame after our outstanding performance away to Merton last time out
Good spirit was shown however when we regrettably went down to 10 men
Tough game this week away to South Bank 6’s ….but we beat them at home so it could be our first double of the season!!
We can still stay up …….so that is very much the aim !!!!!!!!!!!
TUNJI GOLDEN BOOT
10- Ben Wilkes
3- Alejandro, Allen
2- Steve Harding, OG, Hunter
1- Mike Robinson, Salas, Keeble
